PTE Speaking Tips

During my first test, I was very concerned about content especially in sections for "Retell Lecture" and "Describe Image". But after my research on how they score and some of the tips from those folks who have taken the tests, fluency is the most important factor. During my first test, I used a lot of "Arr, Arr, Hmm, Hmm" because I needed time to think to give more information about the content.

But in my second attempt, I gave more attention to fluency so I actually scored 90 in fluency and overall speaking score was 88.

For "Retell Lecture", personally, it is not possible to listen and remember them all to retell. So what I did was, I jotted down what I can remember especially key points with numbers,  percentages, years, ages etc. Do not write the names but use the title or occupations instead. For example, if it's said "Dr Michale Alexendra", you just say a doctor said bla bla bla. And instead of trying to write down everything, just try to catch some full sentences. Maybe after the lecture, you might be able to get 4 to 5 sentences and that is pretty much enough for you to say in the time given. You can elaborate it by saying " the lecture privide brief information about XXX. According to the speaker, he said XXX" etc.

As for describe image, same thing applies. Pay attention to fluency more than content. Include an introduction by saying this bar chart/ pie chart/ graph/ image provides information about XXX or illustrates XXX. Then say the highest and lowest figures or key points. You can get more useful vocabulary and ideas about this seciton in below website;

As for Repeat the sentence section, you also cannot write all of them down. No time. So instead of spelling all words, you can write just one letter each for each word.
For example;

"The clinic is located on the second floor of that building infront of the shopping mall"
So instead of writing all down, you can write " T C I L O T S F O T B I O T S M"
Sorry for this poor example, actual sentences may not be that difficult. And for this seciton, the more words you can say, the more marks you get.

So anyway, Good Luck :)
If you have questions, leave a comment. Thanks
Cheers

  11. I was feeling the same way as you did during my five failed attempts of ielts to achieve 7 in each band. I was quite succeed in reading and listening, scoring 7.5, 8 & 8.5 constantly. However I failed in speaking and writing in 0.5 marks. Each time it was either writing or speaking, short of 0.5, making me so stressful.
Now I am taking my time to relax myself.
Hopefully, within next couple of months I would take PTE.

  12. I have appeared in PTE-A twice and scored 90 each in L/R/W. But scored only 61 and 59 in Speaking. There are some values tips provided about re-tell lecture and describe image but can you please provide few tips for read aloud ?
In my previous attempts I tried to speak slowly to finish the text in 40 secs. My score has been 50 in enabling skill (pronunciation). But when I checked the model answers in PTE test builder (macmillan), the read aloud text was being finished in 20-25 secs.

Can you please suggest how fast or slow should we speak in read aloud section.

Thanks for your help in advance.

  21. Hello,
Thanks a lot for some valuable suggestions. I gave PTE 3 times and my score in speaking varied between 54-62, I need 65 :-(

In my last test, I scored almost perfect in L/R/W, but speaking - 59 :-(
The score for oral fluency and pronunciation is 62 & 46 respectively.

It is getting more and more frustrating as I can't stop comparing between IELTS & PTE !! In Ielts, I was stuck at 6.5 in writing (the rest 8.5 and above), while in PTE, I could score 90 in writing but can't achieve 65 in speaking :-(

Nonetheless, appearing for PTE on 13th August, and hopefully can achieve desired scores with the help of your tips, in speaking particularly.

      ===========================
      1) In speaking section, I think what matters the most is pronunciation and fluency. Accent definitely doesn't matter as I spoke in Indian accent throughout the test and never tried speaking in british/american accent. In fact, without realizing at first, I spoke on mute for two of the questions in repeat sentence section and mostly spoke off topic for one of the "re-tell lecture" questions (because I didn't understand anything from the lecture - but of course I did note down important words and used them while "re-telling" the lecture). I definitely wasn't expecting anything above 75 but I scored a full 90! Make sure you read the sentences the way British/American people do - there should be a clear difference in your tone (high/low pitch, tempo) when you are reading a question verses when you are reading a sentence which ends with a full stop. Tip - Relax and keep calm. While speaking, I closed my eyes and imagined that I am speaking to a friend and not a computer. This helped me with my fluency.

I am taking the test again in a week, and tried the practice test today with again only 59 in Speaking. My pronunciation scores are really low, which I am struggling to understand why. I am based in the UK and converse in English on a daily basis (originally from India). Could you please give some tips on how to perform well in the real test?

Do I have to speak slowly to pronounce each word clearly or should I speak naturally in the Read Aloud section. Also, for Re-tell lecture and Describe Image, should the focus be more on fluency than content?

Many thanks! Any help would be much appreciated.

  45. hi aruna, i have just read your message.
in speaking section you need to speak slow in read aloud with correct pronunciation. stress the words like verbs and noun.
and for retell lecture you need to collect main key points which are giving full information in just phrases.never leave the numerical situation like( number, percentage, year, age. and do more practice to find out the keywords.
any other details you want plz contact me on my blog www.macroglobalmogapte.blogspot.com

  46. Hi Dylan,

I am very happy and lucky to come across your blog.
It has proved to be very very useful to me.
The essay that I got were from this list itself.
I require 79 in each section but till date I haven't been able to.
I seriously doubt the PTE exam evaluation process and would go as far as to say that they dupe. The reason why I say so is because I have got the following score in three attempts :
    RWSL 1st time(90,90,77,83), 2nd time(90,85,88,75), 3rd time(74,85,88,90)
1st time I think I made few mistakes in reading but score = 90
2nd time I definitely messed up a few in speaking but its score = 88
3rd time I definitely messed up many in listening but its score = 89
I am very good in Reading and Listening specifically.

The way PTE is giving a low score in one of the section, that too in which I(think) am strong is completely unacceptable.

They are taking advantage of the 79 in each section.
Would be great if you can give some tips or tell about anything similar that you heard from someone else.

Thanks again for this blog. I will see you in Australia soon.
    :)

I am new for this blog, I really need your valuable advice in speaking section

  48. In the Listening test, do we need to write the punctuation marks while writing from dictation like
Are you going to college today?
do we need to put a ? mark there?
or if we are sure that there needs to be a comma in the sentence, do we need to put that
Plus what about exclamations and short voices like haven't, didn't, it's, aren't

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You need to put question mark "?" if it is a question. You don't need to put exclamation mark "!" though.
But if you hear "haven't, didn't, aren't", I suggest you write exactly the same. What I know is that you are given marks depending on how many words you can write correctly.

      Cheers

  49. These days even an image is included in the Speaking short answer section where one has to look at the image, quickly decipher the data and reply back with exact answer for the question. I think these questions are now the toughest part of the entire test. Remember in short questions, you will get 3-4 seconds before microphone opens and then you have to utter the correct answer. Keep telling something not going to help you and keeping microphone open with err, ah [till you find the exact answer when you scan the image] is going to reduce your Oral fluency!!

I got a image with a family chart of a guy and his two sister's name & age.Question was who is more older than him ? You need to scan three names, figure out the two female names and quickly pick the higher age. Remember before the question starts you don't have much idea on the exact information that you have to pick and then when your question finishes then you have only few seconds to speak out the right name based on three numerical values.

I think PTE is also tightening it's ropes and frequently 80+ scores across all modules may not be a familiar news anymore.

Btw, thanks for your excellent tips. Particularly on Re tell sentence and image. Those were really helpful. This speaking section is really tricky as I stay in an English speaking country and never got any negative vibe on my communication skills rather it was appreciated on customer meetings, presentations. I frequently interact with native speakers & never got a feedback! Even in my IELTS attempt without preparation got 8 in speaking. But somehow the PTE Computer is finding me a poor communicator !!!! I doubt whether PTE 80+ score in speaking really indicates a 'good speaker' in real life ?

  57. Dear Dylang,

Hope you remember me, I did my 2nd attempt in PTE exam on 26th Nov, result which I got L62/R67/S67/W63, Grammar 86 / oral fluency 69/ pronunciation 60/ Spelling 21/ vocab 74/ written discourse 90.

I am not satisfied with the result since I was quite sure in Writing and Listening and also when I took the mock test (which I purchased on pearson practice website) I scored 81 in spelling whereas in this text it is showing just 21 since I very much remembered that I hardly did any mistakes in spelling also you can see my written discourse is 90/90. I was expecting minimum 65+ in each section only just 2-3 marks are less in Listening and Writing whereas I was quite confident specially about listening and writing that I would be able to score more then 70/90 in these sections after my extensive 6 months of preparation. Since for my Australia PR requirement is 65/90 in all four modules. I got total 62/90 which is feel is also PTE did wrong calculation.

I had a long emails exchanged with PTE customer support, but every time they just give standard answer of re scoring which costs USD125 here in india or re exam which is USD160.

Need your expertise advise, what I should do now. I need 65/90 in all 4 by Jan end 2016.

I took the PTE test twice and both time my L R W came back really high while the speaking score was confusingly low (61 & 62). I followed the format of (1) overall point, (2) x-y axis, (3) high and low. The weird thing is that my pronunciation is rated really low, while all of the people i met said that I pronounce perfect English *puzzle*

Would you be able to give some advices on how to practice for PTE speaking?

      Thank you so much!

    2. Hi Anonymous

Firstly, my apologies for late reply. There is no set format as far as speaking is concerned. One thing that I would definitely stress upon, would be to be as natural as possible while attempting the speaking section. Timing as well as intonation is of the utmost importance. Make sure that you do not exceed the time limit or rather you are able to complete all the required tasks well within the required time. Do not take a pause of more than 3 seconds or else that particular recording would be annulled. Let me know if there are any further queries.

    3. Also do not worry about the format. It has nothing to do with the scores. Try not to fumble. Be as fluent as you can. Do not adopt any accent. Be natural. Thats the trick. I am positive you will get your desired score. Let me know if there are any further queries.

      All the best!

    4. Hi Aditya,

By looking at your name, I think you are Indonesian. Are you? :)

Anyway, I took PTE test once and only got 56 on Speaking, while with IELTS I got 8.0.

I'm not sure what I did wrong, since I have followed all the tips (focus on pronunciation and fluency).

Do you have specific tips that we have to follow during the speaking test?

      Thank you.

      Alex

    5. hey, have you tried pte again? I am really shocked at my results. I have the same situation as yours. I have gotten 7.5 in ielts. That score has expired so I gave a PTE exam. I am getting 85 for reading, writing and listening but my oral fluency is always pushing me backwards.

I gave two demo Pte in official Pte link, got less in speaking. I tried speaking slowly second time, it didn't work out. I flunked in actual exam as well.
