My PTE Sample Essays

I have posted the list of repeated PTE essays questions in my blog before, which is the most popular post. I also posted some useful essay language here. But some people still find it difficult to use those sentences, thus they are unable to get good mark in PTE writing.

Thus, I decided to write some sample essays for those topics by using the sentences I posted. Notice in my essay that most of the sentences can be recycled for many different types
of the topics. I highlighted those sentences that you can memorize and reuse for other topics as well. You just have to be flexible with them.

I will update these essays whenever I have time to write.
Here it is....

1) Question: Do you think consumers should avoid over packaged products or is it the responsibility of producers? (Discussion Essay)

A matter of considerable controversy at present is the issue of whether it is the responsibility of consumers to avoid the over-packaged products. Some people maintain that the producers are the ones who should be held responsible for this matter.  Both sides of this contentious issue will be put under scrutiny in this essay, and my opinion as to which holds more weight will be given.

To begin with, I will now consider what I hold to be the causes of this phenomenon. Packaging ensures that people can buy and use products when they want them, in good condition and with little wastage. However, it is undeniable that some goods have too much packaging. Moreover, the packaged goods industry is highly competitive, and packaging manufacturers are under pressure to come up with new and better packaging solutions to compete in their market. The more resources the packaging needs, the higher the cost of the products and eventually, consumers will have to bear that extra cost.

From consumers’ perspective, the packaging does not really matter for most buyers as what they care about is the quality and the price of the products. From a personal experience, I am not really concerned how the packaging actually looks as long as the item that I am purchasing is what I need. In addition, it is worth pointing out that the packaging will be a waste of money and investment no matter how good or how thick it is if the quality of the product does not meet the requirement of the consumers.

Taking these points into consideration, from a personal perspective, I am inclined to believe that manufacturers are more responsible to avoid over-packaging the goods as it would be wasting the consumers’ money for no practical benefits.

2) Question: You are given climate as the field of study. Which area will you prefer? Explain why u picked up the particular area for your study.

All over the world today, it can be observed that the issue of climate change has grown in importance over the past few decades. Therefore, if I were given climate as my field of study, I would like to study the underlying causes of this devastating global phenomenon and possible solutions to tackle this.

To begin with, a variety of reasons can be offered to explain why I would choose this particular area of study. Foremost among these is the fact that we have been experiencing the hottest 15 years on record in the last two decades. Linked to this is the fact that millions are at risk of drought, chronic water shortages, bushfire, coastal flooding and hazardous air pollution. As the above-mentioned points make it clear, it can hardly be denied that the issues of climate change must be addressed with a sense of urgency.

But what really is the proper role for individuals and institutions in addressing climate change? An immediate and natural response may be that everyone should do their part. As individuals, we can help by taking action to reduce our personal carbon emissions. But to fully address the threat of global warming, we must demand action from our elected leaders to support and implement a comprehensive set of climate solutions such as transforming our energy system to a cleaner one, placing limits on the amount of carbon that polluters are allowed to emit, reducing tropical deforestation and its associated global warming emissions.

In conclusion, It is my considered opinion that if we were to put in place some of the solutions mentioned, we would at least be on our way to solving this problem. Therefore, I would like to play my part to contribute to the solution of climate change.

  1. It is generally assumed that we should avoid personal pronouns like I , We in essays and opinions can be generalized like : it can be concluded as....

    Is it true?

    1. Actually, I know where you are coming from because that's exactly what I tried to avoid. I used to write "One" instead of "I" because I wanted to avoid personal pronoun. While I was trying to pass my IELTS, I eventually took this writing class with British Council in Singapore and asked the teacher specifically that same question.

And he told me not to worry and that it is not true although in academic writing, people normally avoid using personal pronouns because it does not sound so academic if you make it too personal.

But he did tell me that if they essay asked you what your opinion is, you really need to include your personal opinion. If you don't, you might even lose mark for that. So if you don't want to write, " I want to conclude or I conclude", you can always write, from my personal perspective.

Those typical sentences I posted in this blog are taken from academic writing guide book and also from those classes I have taken.

      Good Luck

  2. Hi Dylan, Can you please help me out in summarizing the written text. I'm facing difficulty in writing it. Actually i had gone through the essays, those are very good i think it will be helpful to me in scoring high marks. My exam is on 4th.

  3. Rephrasing your word will be creating a brand new word which uses a similar syntax since the initial and this contains the identical problematic text. Most of us try this to ensure we could assess the design along with phrase choice in a less complicated, safer to understand word. See more sentence check

    1. Not sure what exactly you meant. My collections are from several academic writing books and English classes from British Council. I have personally used them both in IELTS and PTE exams. I scored 8 in IELTS writing and 87 in PTE writing. And as for you, it does not matter what sources you use as long as you can score good in your writing.

  5. Can anyone explain what needs to be discussed in the essay: You are given climate as the field of study. Which area will you prefer? Explain why you picked up the particular area for your study?
Should we discuss issues related to a particular area of earth like melting of glaciers in north pole/ change in weather/ global warming
Or it should discuss greenhouse effect/ depletion of ozone layer/ Pollution etc?

    1. Can I ask if you got this question from PTE exam?? Question is not clear. If what you have written is the actual question, you are given a general task so you can say you want to choose a specific area of climate study you are familiar with, be it anything Yiu have mentioned in your question. Then go on and explain why you choose that

    2. Hi Aung,
Thanks for the above composition of essay. Don't you think your essay is more about role of individual in climate change where the question is about area of climate. Like I was thinking something related to geographical area like north pole for melting of glaciers or equatorial countries for ozone depletion .

Or if we totally take it to climatology, then it could be greenhouse effect like something

    3. If it was for PTE, then what I wrote is sufficient. PTE is an English test but not on your knowledge about such specific area. Unless if this essay was for your PHD entrance application, I do not think you need to write those. It ask you what area and why. I believe if you give a general answer with proper composition, vocabulary and grammar, that's all that matter. Nevertheless you feel you can write about any of those area you mentioned in your comment up to 250-300 words without mistake, no issue then.
      Cheers

    4. :) :) so it means machine does not understand what you have written. If its related to environment write any thing in grammatical way with terms like greenhouse ozone, high sea level melting of glaciers. right? :)

      Delete
    5. Hello...

I would not say the machine does not understand. But for all types of English test, even for IELTS, they actually want to test how you express yourself in English even if you are not family with the topic given. Thus, they are not expecting you to write very detail and specific information of the topic given.

I would write something general so I make less mistake but put it in very academic way of writing with a few flowery expressions.

      Good luck with your test.

  11. Do you think consumer should avoid over packed products or it is responsibility of producer to avoid extra packaging of products?" Give your views or any relevant example with your own experience.
    Word Count 286
Packaging of a product plays a vital role in the sale of the goods and is required to store the product for a long time, transport the product and carry product information. Whether the consumers should avoid over packed products or the responsibility lies with the owner is definitely a matter of deliberation. In my opinion, both the producer and the end user should take the onus to avoid excessive packaging of a product until or unless it’s severely required or unavoidable.
Most companies focus on the packing with intent of how this will drive customers to the product and how much does it costs. The environmental sustainability takes backseat for product packing. For example, the typical snack chip bag is made up till seven layers of foil and plastic which make them light, reduce shipping volume, more graphics friendly and doesn’t consume much shelf space. However, the downside is they aren’t recyclable.
A business has legal duty to meet general environmental obligations .The effects should be mitigated by use of more recyclable materials for packing rather than using plastics or other non degradable materials.
On the other hand, the consumer should also be aware that the manufacturers are not liable for disposal of the waste produced from the packaging. Customers should give preference to the products with minimum covering or to the products packed with recyclable material.
In conclusion, both the producers and consumers should put their best foot forward to stop this malpractice. The manufacturers should voluntarily reduce packaging and give more stress on using recyclable materials. On the other side, the consumers should refrain from buying excessively packaged products and prefer products with packaging that could be reused, composted and recycled.

  12. Many people think regions affect successful persons. What is your opinion about native regions and accomplished person influence on the regions they belong to?
    Word Count 284
Success is not dependent on a single reason and is achieved on collective basis like upbringing, social environment, aptitude, attitude, passion and determination. Nevertheless, every aspect to get success has an involvement of the said features and is a matter of discussion. There is no assertion that successful people belong to a particular region
The foremost influence on a successful person’s life is of his upbringing. It does not mean that son of a priest will always be successful and that of a dacoit will always be criminal. However the values nourished during childhood offshoots the seed of success. Subsequently the social environment around the person also impacts his attitude towards success. In addition, the education has a vital role in developing the aptitude. Lastly courage, will power and full determination are the pillars for feat.

If we observe the lives of most successful people in the world, they have achieved success from travelling to different parts of the world and not in the countries they were born. Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Graham Bell, Khalil Gibran, Albert Einstein, Mother Teresa all became more famous out of their native regions. Swami Vivekananda travelled throughout India to gain the knowledge of Indian culture and became successful in America with his famous discourse at Chicago. Many Indian entrepreneurs like L.N Mittal, Anil Agarwal and Indian CEO’s of MNC’s like Microsoft and Pepsico have accomplished their triumph miles away from their home country.
To a large extent, belonging to a specific region is not a criteria or a key to become a successful icon. It is hard work and commitment which have a vital part to play in every victorious story. Success comes to those who will and dare.

  13. Hi Dylan, is a score of 36 points attainable? given that I was only able to review in the past 2 weeks

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hi Dylan, for the essay part, I was being told that i got to write at least 3 points on the agree side, and 1 point on the disagree part. Is that so? This is because from your essay, it seems that not so many points are needed and I am afraid I would not be able to come out with so many points for a particular topic.
    Thank you so much.

  15. The adventure sports were there in past but are limited to the defense purpose. Today due to the advancement in technology, these are easily accessible to common public. Consequently, many companies are establishing theme based parks for cash in on this trend by hosting these sports. While it may have some benefits, it inevitably brings many disadvantages.

On the Positive side, there are few advantaged in involving these extreme sports such as ….. These sports keeps us fit. They burn calories and keeps blood flowing. It extends the limits of body little by little and makes us stronger. It gives us lot of fun, just like any other sports, it relaxes mind and rejuvenates it. Moreover, it helps us in building confidence and motivations. This in turn helps in taking decisions in our work when sometimes where needed, people are too timid to take risk or hard decision.

On the negative hand, connecting to these sports is like putting your life in unnecessary danger just for recreation purpose. For instance we may get injured even with more safety precautions. In some cases, may even die trying and performing these stunts. It is training the body out of the comfort zone and may not go well if our body is not prepared for such heavy work outs or one not a regular practitioner of adventure sports. Also sometimes person may not realize the fragility of one’s health and may get into trouble.

Like two sides of the coin, extreme sports comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. Many time disadvantages outnumbered advantages. They are not compulsory.it is voluntary to be part of them. But one needs to understand that extreme sports are mostly meant as break in life and not something to be included in your regular life. It’s up to us to decide what we need to do, how cautious we must be and what limits we must follow. Proper precautions and training can help us enjoy the sport to the fullest.
